Research Experiences for Undergraduates (REU)
Program
A MIMER
team consists of a network of
researchers with diverse backgrounds in engineering, physics, applied
physics, chemistry, and industry, researching a topic of common
interest in Materials Science. The central theme is the study of
structure-property relationships of surfaces and interfaces using
atomic-scale fabrication and imaging techniques. A major objective of
the program is to expose undergraduates, teachers and graduate students
to all aspects of a research project and to prove the synergistic
capabilities of an interdisciplinary research team. Outcomes of the
project include a student-conducted seminar, a classroom module, and a
web page for the MRSEC site.
A MIMER team-based summer research program is
offered in parallel with the CRISP Research Experiences for
Undergraduates (REU) program. Two REU programs are offered by CRISP:
the CRISP REU
Fellowship (Yale SURF residential) and the CRISP
REU @ SCSU Fellowship (non-residential). Other MIMER
activities offered to undergraduates include mini courses in atomic
scale visualization (scanning electron, transmission electron and
atomic force microscopy); academic year research experiences,
participation in regional and international professional meetings,
career counseling in Materials Science.
The CRISP REU is an eight week
summer research experience. Students will participate in collaborative
research projects taking place in both Yale and Southern
laboratories. MIMER activities will be offered to all
participants with several students becoming MIMER team members.
The CRISP curriculum development
component includes courses designed to enhance science/engineering
literacy for humanities students.
