Research Experiences for Teachers (RET) Program

A MIMER team consists of a network of researchers with diverse backgrounds in engineering, physics, applied physics, chemistry, and industry, researching a topic of common interest in Materials Science. MIMER offerings for science teachers include credit bearing courses offered through SCSU’s M.S. in Science Education.

Sustained research experience in a scientific discipline is integral to SCSU’s M.S. in Science Education program; the MRSEC model of interdisciplinary research is an ideal match. Additional MIMER opportunities for science teachers include microscopy mini-courses, professional development workshops and participation on a MIMER team. A major objective of the MIMER program is to contribute to the improvement of K-12 science education by providing more qualified, socially diverse teachers, and, teacher-developed curriculum on Materials Science. The program embodies the National Science Education Standards, in offering professional development that is heavily based on investigations, where current and future teachers have direct contact with phenomena, gather and interpret data using appropriate technology, and are involved in groups working on real, open-ended problems.

Upcoming CRISP Professional Development Workshops:

  • Nanotechnology & Photonics workshop: Nov. 7, 2009 — flyer
  • MBE Nanotechnology Tools workshop: Nov. 14, 2009 — flyer

MIMER participants gain credit via the following course offers:

SCE 575 — Integrated Science Experience [summer session]
SCE 574 — Special Project in Science Education [academic year; fall and spring]
IDS 571 — Science Laboratory Practice [summer session]

Two scholarships will be available this summer for New Haven area teachers participating in MIMER courses and team activities.  The Research Experiences for Teachers (RET) program involves local science teachers in a research project over the summer as part of a MIMER team. The applications for summer programs are due April 1, 20 (Application for RET scholarship); (Application for RET fellowship).

For more information about these programs, please contact: Dr. Christine Broadbridge, Education Director, or, Jackie Garofano, Education and Outreach Coordinator.
